Toy guides, toy rotation, and quiet time routines for ages 0–6.

25 Best Toys for a 4 Month Old (4 to 5 Months)

The best toys for a 4 month old are the ones they can grab, chew, and look at. You don’t need many toys for a 4 month old, so this list is short on purpose.

Somewhere around 4 months, the sleepy newborn who was happy to snuggle and look around turns into a baby who wants in on the action! The best toys for 4 month olds are toys they can grab, chew, and look at.

You still don’t need many toys at this age. The mostly need a lot of you. So this list is short on purpose. It’s built around the milestones babies are working on at 4 and 5 months.

As your baby gets older, you’ll notice my toy guides are organized by my 11 play categories I use at home. If you want the big picture for the whole first year, start with our guide to the best toys for babies and 1 year olds.

Developmental Milestones for 4 Month Olds

These come from the CDC’s 4 month milestone checklist (part of their Learn the Signs. Act Early. program), which lists what most babies (75% or more) can do by 4 months.

Remember that all babies are different. Your baby might have conquered most of this list weeks ago (like my first), or they might be a little sleepier and slower to show off their skills (like my second). Both are normal.

4 Month Old Developmental Milestones infographic. Social and emotional development. Verbal development. Brain development. Physical Development.

Social and emotional

  • Smiles on their own to get your attention
  • Chuckles when you try to make them laugh (not quite a full laugh yet)
  • Looks at you, moves, or makes sounds to get or keep your attention

Language and communication

  • Coos (“oooo” and “aahh”)
  • Makes sounds back when you talk to them
  • Turns their head toward the sound of your voice

Thinking and problem-solving

  • Opens their mouth when they see the breast or bottle and they’re hungry
  • Looks at their own hands with interest

Movement and physical

  • Holds their head steady without support when you’re holding them
  • Holds a toy when you put it in their hand
  • Uses their arm to swing at toys
  • Brings hands to mouth
  • Pushes up onto elbows or forearms during tummy time

Coming up next, the 6 month checklist adds rolling from tummy to back, reaching for a toy they want, looking at themselves in a mirror, and blowing raspberries.

So a lot of what you do at 4 and 5 months is getting them ready for that. Here’s how those skills line up with the toy categories:

What they’re working onWhere it shows up in playJump to
Head control, pushing up on forearmsTummy time and gross motorGross motor
Holding a toy, swinging at toysGrabby toys and rattlesFine motor

🍎 Quick note from the teacher side of me: milestones are a range, not a test. Just because they can or can’t do something on this list doesn’t mean anything is wrong. Just stay up to date on your pediatrician’s well visits, and if something is bugging you, bring it up. You know your baby best.

Independent Play for 4 Month Olds

Independent play is not unsupervised or “alone” playtime. Independent play looks like your baby doing something in a safe space in the same room as you.

For example: your baby is playing in their play gym, and you are reading a book on the couch next to the.

It sounds early, but teaching independent play (for 5-10 minutes at this age) will help set your child up for success with longer stretches of independent play when they get older.

Start with 1 or 2 minutes and slowly work up to 5 or 10. I built it into our morning routine so I could drink my coffee while it was still warm. Those little stretches are the very first building blocks of the quiet time routine we still use years later.

Gross Motor Toys and Tummy Time for 4 Month Olds

The best tummy time toys give them something worth lifting their head for. Holding their head steady and pushing up on their forearms are the big physical skills at 4 months.

In my experience, babies either love tummy time or hate it. With most the babies I know falling firmly into the hate category 😂

Bright Starts 5-in-1 Your Way Ball Play Mat

Both of my kids loved it as infants. They’d lie on their backs watching the singing elephant, do tummy time on the silky mat, get propped up on the included pillow, and once they could sit, it turned into a ball pit.

One tip: at 4 months, all those features at once can be a lot. Start with just the mat and a toy or two, and add the rest as they grow.

Grows With Them!

Bright Starts 5-in-1 Your Way Ball Play – Jumbo Play Mat

Both of my kids loved this play gym as infants. From laying on their back watching the singing elephant, to tummy time on the silky mat, to propped up with the included pillow, and when they are ready to sit and play, it converts to a ball pit!

  • Includes 40 balls with carrying case for easy storage
  • Cheerful elephant toy lights up and plays 20 minutes of music (and detaches for on-the-go fun)
  • Includes 7 tropically cool take-along toys: elephant musical toy, crinkle toy, mirror, flash cards, hanging leaf toy and bead rattle
  • Grow with me from infant to toddler, ages newborn and up
  • Machine washable mat and easy-to-clean wipeable toys

If tummy time is a battle, a light bar they can smack or a water mat can buy you a few more minutes.

Baby Einstein Glow & Discover Light Bar

This bar brings fun to tummy time (and they all hate tummy time!!). It's great for cause-and-effect as they hit the different buttons and watch and listen to the music and lights.

  • The Baby Einstein Glow & Discover Light Bar Activity Station is a multisensory toy that engages baby with colorful lights, classical melodies, and animal sounds during floor play or tummy time.
  • 3 ways to engage baby as they grow: Bar sits flat for tummy time and props up for seated play. Unisex design for baby boy or girl ages 3 months to 36 months.

Baby Einstein Ocean Explorers Sensory Splash Water Play Mat

A water mat is a great way to spruce up tummy time when your baby is little. It helps them move their head and arms for gross motor control. As they get older they can start to use their fingers to push around the objects for fine-motor development.

Activity Center or Baby Jumper

Once your baby holds their head up well, an activity center lets them stand, bounce, and reach is great for their gross motor development. My oldest would have lived in his if we’d let him.

With my first, we were in the jumper by 4 months. With my second it wasn’t until 6 months. It all depend on their head and neck control.

Ingenuity 3-in-1 Baby Jumper and Activity Center

I think my oldest might have lived in his activity center if we let him! He would jump and spin, play with the toys, and be happy as a clam!

Toddleroo Playpen

Playpens are helpful for creating safe spaces for babies to play. Especially when you have multiple children. We loved this Toddleroo playpen because it can be used as a pen, or attached to the wall with the wall adaptors.

Toddleroo Superyard Playard

We used ours as a playpen, and when my little one wanted more space to roam, we attached it to the walls (with the adaptor) and created a baby-safe side of the room.

  • SAFE PLAY SPACE: Create a safe play area for kids. The 6-panel play yard encloses up to 18.5 sq. ft. and is 26 in. tall. Our portable baby playpen has six bright, playful colors and folds quickly for easy portability with included carry strap.

  • ADJUSTABLE & FLEXIBLE: Adjust our toddler playpen to fit your space. The hinges move independently for angled or straight setups. Need a bigger area? Add a 2-Panel Extension (sold separately) for 6.5 ft. corner to corner, a 34.4 sq. ft. play area.

Toddleroo Superyard Wall Mount Kit

We used this wall mount kit to convert our playard into an extra wide gate. And don't worry, once you attach it to the wall, it's still easy to take on and off to convert back to a playpen when needed.

  • PERFECT FOR WIDE OPENINGS: This wall mount kit allows your Superyard to span openings from 38.5 in. up to over 16 ft., making it ideal for open floor plans or large spaces that need to be sectioned off.

Free Tummy Time Activities for Babies

A few free tummy time ideas I’ve used for years:

  • Tummy time tray of water. Put a towel on the floor and set a shallow tray of water on it (about 1/4 inch deep). Let your baby splash their hands. Add a soft spoon or a bath toy for extra interest.
  • Mirror play. Almost every baby loves a mirror, which is why they show up on so many baby toys. A plastic floor mirror in front of them is a great motivator to lift their head.
  • Outside on a blanket. Moving tummy time to the grass is a whole new world: clouds, leaves, breeze, and new textures under their hands.
  • A balloon on a hair tie. Babies are fascinated by mylar balloons (they’re less likely to pop). I tied one to a hair tie and slipped the hair tie around my baby’s foot so I could reuse it. Then just watch them kick. Supervise closely, always.
  • Baby pull-ups. Lay your baby on their back, hold behind their upper back (don’t grab from the hands as this risks dislocating a shoulder), and gently lift toward sitting. Wait for them to engage their neck before you keep going so their head doesn’t flop back.
  • Horsey. Cross your legs, lay your baby belly-down on your dangling leg, hold them steady, and gently bounce.
  • For more tummy time and play mat ideas, see our gross motor toy guide.
  • For crawling and walking toys later on, our VTech picks are a good next step.

Fine Motor Toys for 4 Month Olds

Holding a toy you put in their hand and swinging at toys are both milestones on the 4 month list. The best toys here are light, easy to hook a finger into, and safe to chew (because that’s where everything is headed). More ideas are in our fine motor skills toy guide.

Oball Toys

The Oball works its magic on every baby I’ve ever met. I literally had to peel my son’s fingers off of one at daycare before I finally caved and bought one for home.

My babies loved to twist their fingers through the holes at the end and use that grip to shake it like crazy. It’s easy to grab, easy to shake, and easy to chew.

Ring links are great for feeling different textures now and linking them together later. The soft activity book is a little busy board you can toss in the diaper bag.

Sassy Ring O Links

The smallest hands can feel the different textures of each ring, and once your little one gets some dexterity, they can link and unlink the rings for fine motor practice.

  • TACTILE STIMULATION: Different materials and surfaces stimulate baby's sense of touch and teach baby to recognize new objects.
  • EASY GRASP: Textured handle is easy to grasp and great for mouthing
  • VISUAL STIMULATION: Contrasting black, white and brightly colored links stimulate baby's developing vision.
  • SAFE FOR ALL CHILDREN: Complies with all government standards for infant products. All Sassy rattles and teethers are tested to the most rigid age grade standards.
  • Top Rack Dishwasher Safe

Open-Ended Toys for 4 Month Olds

Open-ended toys are the ones with no “right or wrong,” way to play. Close-ended toys have a solution or a winner like a puzzle or a board game.

At 4 months, open-ended play mostly looks like looking, grabbing, and laughing at you. Our guide to open-ended toys follows these same toys into the toddler years.

Play Silks

Silk scarves are one of the most open-ended toys we own. Right now, you’re running them through your baby’s fingers for sensory play or floating one over their face for peekaboo.

Peekaboo is a big one at this age: it helps your baby recognize, practice, and mirror facial expressions (and it gets you those smiles and chuckles from the milestone list). Before you know it, those same silks are capes, ropes, and fort roofs.

A Lifetime of Play

Other open-ended toys we like

  • High contrast patterns are easier for baby's foggy eyesight to see
  • Flip through fun flashcards and support cognitive development
  • Includes baby-safe mirror
  • Cards include link for carriers
  • Wipes clean

Fisher-Price Sit-Me-Up Floor Seat

This seat was great once my little ones were old enough to hold their heads up. The could sit in a safe place and watch me cook dinner or fold laundry, and play indepenedently.

Fisher-Price Sit-Me-Up Floor Seat

  • Soft and supportive infant seat with a wide, sturdy base to help your baby sit up and play
  • Removable, dishwasher-safe snack tray for easy feeding
  • Plush Puppy Perfection headrest helps keep unsteady sitters comfy
  • 2 linkable baby toys, including a BPA-free teether and clacker toy
  • Easily moves from room to room: Frame folds flat for convenient storage and travel

Honestly, one of the best open-ended “toys” at this age is a basket. Fill a fabric tote or woven basket with safe things from around the house: a soft brush, a clean sponge, a spatula, an empty plastic bottle (no cap), a scrap of fabric, a soft ball.

  • Touch and feel books help children who are not interested in books engage in books
  • The sensory experience of seeing a picture, hearing you read the words, and feeling the texture is perfect for early development

Blocks and Stacking for 4 Month Olds

At 4 months, stacking means you stack and your baby watches (and then knocks it over, which is the best part). It’s how they learn how things move and fall. When they’re ready for more, our building toys guide has the next steps.

Silicone Stacking Coasters

You’re not going to find coasters on most baby toy lists 😂

But stacking coasters were a must-have for both of my kids. We started with wooden ones, and silicone is a real upgrade because they’re soft, easy for small hands to hold, and safe when they inevitably become a teether.

Silicone Drink Coasters

Silicone Drink Coasters

You're not going to find coasters on a standard kid's toys list 🤣 But stacking coasters were a must-have for both of my kids. We had wooden coasters, but the silicone ones are a definite uprgrade and much better if they decide to use them as a teething toy!

Musical Toys for 4 Month Olds

Cooing and turning toward your voice are both on the 4 month milestone list, and music is one of the easiest ways to play with sound.

Sing in the car, sing classic kids’ songs, sing whatever. Our list of lullabies with lyrics is a good place to start, and our musical toys guide covers instruments for later.

Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes Musical Toy

My kids loved their little "radio," that they could choose the songs. It's a pretty non-descript toy, but makes the list for being a great music player that both kids adored.

Fisher-Price Calming Clouds Mobile

Fisher-Price Calming Clouds Mobile

We had a previous version of this mobile and loved that it converted as the baby gets older to keep them entertained at different stages.

  • Motorized crib Mobile that transitions to tabletop sound machine with nightlight as baby grows
  • Sleep expert-approved ready settle sleep playlist of music and sounds plus gentle lights help baby fall and stay asleep
  • Restarts without disturbing baby! Sensor automatically activates overhead mobile when baby makes noise
  • Sleek Mobile features plush clouds with colorful raindrops to encourage eye-tracking
  • For use on crib from 0-5 months, and tabletop from 5 months and up

Screen-free audio players are great later on too. My in-laws gave my son a Tonie box when he turned one, and I know we’d have used it earlier. These days, our Yoto Mini players are part of our everyday routine.

Free Music Activities to do With a 4 Month Old

A few more ways to play with sound that don’t cost a thing:

  • Say your baby’s name all day long (“Where is Cora?” “Do you want your bottle, Marco?”)
  • Copy the sounds and faces your baby makes (it’s a riot, and it builds their confidence)
  • Tell them what you’re doing, what you did yesterday, and stories about your own childhood.

Sensory and Teething Toys for 4 Month Olds

Bringing hands to mouth is a 4 month milestone, and babies learn by mouthing. Teething toys that are easy to grip and chill in the fridge are the ones we reached for most. Every one of these counts as a sensory toy at this age.

Sophie la Girafe

Sophie la Girafe

She's a classic in my house. In fact, I almost always gift her as a baby shower gift. Babies love how soft she is, her chewy texture, and squeaker.

  • Sophie la girafe Comes in a gift box with a storage pouch
  • Sophie la girafe is the first baby toy that awakens all her senses; sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell
  • Practical and hygienic, its storage pouch allows you to easily store and transport Sophie la Girafe while protecting it from dirt
  • Sophie la girafe can now accompany your baby on the go
  • Suitable from birth and surface washable

Nuby Ice Gel Teether Keys

These teething keys were perfect for our little ones to soothe sore gums during teething. You can put them in the freezer (or fridge if the freezer is too intense) for some relief.

  • BABY TEETHING TOYS: Our teething toys are perfect for soothing sore gums during every stage of baby teething; Place in refrigerator to provide a soothing, cooling sensation for your little one

Nuby Teethe N' Pop Sensory Play Teether

Our babies loved the feel of Nuby teething toys. This turtle has different textures for them to explore with their teeth and gums. It also practices hand-eye coordination.

  • TURTLE TEETHING TOY FOR 3+ MONTHS: Playful Teethe N' Pop Turtle soothes your little one's discomfort and assists in the emergence of teeth
  • SUPER SOFT BABY TEETHER: This teether toy is made of 100% soft silicone for sensitive, tender mouths, which provides teething relief without being rough on sore gums
  • COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT: Multiple textures and fun turtle shape captivate baby's attention and help stimulate sensory development; Fun Pop Center assists in the development of fine motor skills
  • MADE FOR SENSORY PLAY: This teething toy is thoughtfully designed to encourage sensory play

Free Sensory Play Activities for Babies

Other sensory ideas we’ve loved:

  • Homemade sensory bags made with a zip-top bag, hair gel, and pom poms. Supervise sensory bags closely, since a burst bag becomes a hazard fast.
  • Bath time counts as sensory play too. We had a baby who really didn’t like bath time for a while, so I get it, but water, splashing, and a few floating toys are a great experience once they warm up to it.

Pretend Play and Nurturing for 4 Month Olds

I’ll be honest: there’s no pretend play or nurturing toy a 4 month old needs. Everything they learn about caring for someone, they’re learning from how you care for them. Down the road, our pretend play guide and nurturing toys guide become important, but for now, these are the social activities I’d lean on:

  • Show pictures of family. Start with 2 or 3 photos and add more over time. Describe each person: “This is your nana. She loves baking cookies and singing songs.”
  • Raspberries and silly games. Anything that gets giggles. Just give them breaks, especially if your baby has reflux, unless you want a surprise.
  • Babywearing. It’s soothing for them, and it lets you connect while you get things done.
  • Walks. Carrying, wearing, or strolling, daily walks are a year-round thing at our house. If your baby falls asleep, it’s not boredom. It’s comfort. A stroller toy they can reach for helps on fussy days, and we had a breathing, light-up soothing hedgehog that was a lifesaver when my baby got overstimulated.
  • Library story time, lap time classes, and playdates. New faces and new places are great for babies. Plan short trips with breaks for naps and feeding. Many children’s museums have nursing and changing areas.

Safety Notes for 4 Month Olds

  • The toilet paper tube test. Anything that fits through a toilet paper tube is a choking hazard. Also avoid anything hot, frozen solid, or sharp.
  • Cords and strings. Anything 6 inches or longer is a strangulation hazard.
  • Skills before toys. Even if a toy is labeled for their age, make sure your baby has the skills it needs (like good head control for an activity center or a baby seat) and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Limit time in “containers”. Swings, bouncers, car seats, jumpers, and seats are handy, but floor time is where rolling, reaching, and pushing up happen.
  • Screens. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends avoiding screen time for babies this young, other than video chatting with family.
  • Rolling changes things. Once your baby starts rolling, it’s time to stop swaddling and lower the crib mattress.
  • Always supervise playtime. A play yard or a wide baby gate can give a curious baby a safe space to explore, especially with older siblings and their small parts around.

Every baby grows at their own pace, so enjoy this stage however it looks at your house. If your baby is younger, our newborn toy guide covers 0 to 3 months. When rolling and reaching take over, move on to the best toys for 6 month olds.

Shopping for a baby on the go? Our travel toys guide has packable picks, and you can find every age and category on our toy guides page. Soft toys like the flip fish and activity book are Melissa & Doug favorites, too.

FAQ

What toys should a 4 month old play with?

Simple toys they can grab, shake, and chew (an Oball, a rattle, a teether), something to look at during tummy time (a play mat, a mirror, or a water mat), and a few board books. Pair those with lots of talking, singing, and peekaboo with you.

How many toys does a 4 month old need?

Not many. Two or three toys out at a time is plenty. Keep the rest put away and swap them in. That’s the whole idea behind our toy rotation.

How do I entertain my 4 month old all day?

Mix short bursts of floor play and tummy time with everyday life: talk them through what you’re doing, go for a walk, read, sing, and give them a few calm minutes to look around on their own. You don’t have to perform all day.

Are activity centers and jumpers okay at 4 months?

Only once your baby has good head control, and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for height and weight restrictions. Keep the time short, since babies build strength best on the floor.

What is the best teether for a 4 month old?

One that’s easy to hold with lots of textures. We loved Sophie la Girafe and Nuby teethers, and teething keys you can chill in the fridge help with sore gums.

Can I use toys labeled 3 to 6 months?

Yes. Most baby toys labeled 3-6 months are a great fit at 4 months.
