18 First Birthday Gift Ideas: Toys, Keepsakes, and More

A first birthday is a funny milestone to shop for. The birthday kid will probably be more excited about the wrapping paper than the gift, and might take one bite of cake and cry. (Totally normal.)

This list of first birthday gift ideas mixes toys, bigger gifts that grow with them, and gifts that aren’t toys at all.

I also included what I’d skip, how to handle a “no gifts, please” invitation, and what I do with the mountain of new toys after the party.

The Best First Birthday Gifts

A first birthday gift is for the baby that’s about to become a toddler, so the gifts should match the major upcoming milestones:

  • cruising and walking
  • putting things in and taking them out
  • stacking
  • first words
  • copying everything you do

If you want the full rundown by stage, our best toys for 12 to 17 month olds guide lays it all out. After the party, I sort the new toys into our 11 toy categories and put most of them in storage.

First Birthday Toys Ideas

These are the toys I’d give a new 1-year-old knowing they’ll get played with for a long time. None of them are flashy or loud.

Battat Save and Count Learning Toy

This piggy bank was a first birthday gift for my youngest, and he was still playing with it all the time at two. Pushing a coin through a slot is great fine motor practice. Our Battat guide has more of their simple learning toys.

Battat Save and Count Learning Toy

This was a surprise toy. I didn't think my kids would love it as much as they did. But boy did they! It's great to practice fine motor skills, as well as counting, color recognition, and more.

  • Piggy Bank: Have a ton of educational fun with this piggy bank and play coin set
  • 10 Coins: This learning toy comes with 10 numbered coins in bright colorsu2014great for practicing counting and color recognition
  • Playbook Included: Discover educational play ideas and an illustrated story inside the playbook

A few other simple toys that go the distance: stacking cups (my babies loved these at playtime, bath time, and everywhere in between), soft blocks that are just as fun to squish and chew as they are to stack, and bristle blocks that stick together without much hand strength.

The First Years Stacking Cups

The First Years Stacking Cups

Playtime, bathtime, you name it, my babies loved these! Stack them, build them, and knock them over!

  • This set of stacking toys features 8 brightly colored cups that stack together with unique holes in the bottom for pouring and water play at bath time
  • Montessori Stacking Toys
  • Made without BPA for toddlers and kids ages 9 months and up

Melissa & Doug K's Kids Match and Build Soft Blocks Set

These blocks are just as fun to squish and chew as they are to stack and build. As kids get older they can solve the puzzles to extend the life of the toy

  • Soft block set for babies and toddlers
  • Matching activities pair numerals and quantities, animal halves, and everyday shapes
  • Soft, lightweight pieces (10 cubes and 4 triangles) are easy for young children to lift and manipulate
  • Develops sensory, fine motor, and communication skills

Infantino Press & Stay Sensory Blocks

These blocks are easy to stick together because of the bristles. They are great for sensory play with the bristles too.

  • PRESS, STACK & STAY: When little builders have big ideas, Press & Stay blocks make it easier to bring them to life.
  • The interlocking pattern connects without perfect alignment, so children can press the blocks together, pull them apart, and keep building with less frustration
  • DISCOVERY THEY CAN FEEL: High contrast colors and interesting textures give little hands more to explore. Pressing, connecting, stacking, and separating the sensory blocks encourages hands-on discovery through every build

For busy hands, the bead maze is a simple classic, the matching eggs are a little puzzle (my kids also use the eggs for pretend play), and Spike the hedgehog is so simple that I was surprised by how much my kids loved it.

Melissa & Doug First Bead Maze

Little ones love to slide the bobbles from one side of the track to another.

  • Classic Bead Maze Play: Babies explore four looping wires with 18 beads and 3 rings that slide & spin, encouraging pushing, pulling, & grasping motions while on the floor, at a table, or in a high chair
  • Montessori-Inspired Learning Toy: Sliding & spinning actions strengthen fine motor control, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving while introducing shapes, colors, and cause-and-effect learning through play

Little Tikes Matching Egg Toy

Connect the eggs together and place them in the carton. It's great fine-motor practice. My kids also like using the eggs for pretend play when they aren't solving the puzzle.

  • Educational Matching Fun: Our Easter Egg Toy features 12 colorful eggs that promote cognitive development through matching colors and shapes. Each egg separates for a fun and educational experience.

Learning Resources Spike The Original Fine Motor Hedgehog

My kids loved this more than I would have expected for how simple it is!

  • FINE MOTOR DEVELOPMENT: Spike the Fine Motor Hedgehog helps toddlers strengthen hand muscles, improve coordination, and build the pincer grasp needed for future writing skills
  • COLOR SORTING & MATCHING FUN: Practice color recognition, sorting, and matching with colorful quills that make this one of the most engaging color sorting toys for toddlers
  • BUILD EARLY LEARNING SKILLS: Numbered holes encourage counting, sequencing, and problem-solving while supporting fine motor skills toys for toddlers through hands-on play
  • PORTABLE STORAGE DESIGN: All 12 chunky quills store neatly inside Spike, making this toddler toy perfect for travel, restaurants, daycare, and learning on the go

Fisher-Price Little People Playhouse

This compact one is perfect for a 1-year-old, and eating, sleeping, and bath time are the scenes they’ll copy first. Our nurturing toys guide explains why pretend play toys that teach empathy are so important.

Fisher-Price Little People Playhouse

Sometimes kids just need a familiar setting where they are cared for (like their home) to act out scenes of empathy, caring, and nurturing for others. You don't need a giant dollhouse, even this compact one is perfect.

  • Interactive pretend playhouse for toddlers and kids with 50 sounds, songs & phrases
  • Includes Little People Mom, Dad and Emma figures, plus table and 3 chairs; all pieces store inside the playset with a handle to travel play
  • Helps strengthen fine motor skills and encourages imaginative play and storytelling for toddler and preschool kids ages 1 to 5 years old

VTech Turn and Learn Driver (ages 6mo+)

My kids loved pretending to be bus drivers, pilots, and anything else with an engine. More in our pretend play guide.

Family Favorite

VTech Turn and Learn Driver

Oh boy did my kids get alot of use out of this toy! They loved to pretend to be bus drivers, pilots, or anything else that had an engine.

  • Enhance imaginative role-play by using the signal lever, checking the mirror, and shifting gears while pretending to drive

Big First Birthday Gifts That Grow With Them

If the grandparents or the whole family want to go in on one special gift, these are the ones I’d point them to. Each one works at 1 and keeps working for years. For gifts they’ll grow into, see my best toys for 18-month-olds.

Strider 12 Sport Balance Bike

We had our kids on balance bikes as soon as they were walking. By 4, both of them were riding pedal bikes with no training wheels and no problems. That’s why a balance bike is one of my favorite “milestone” gifts. It’s a big gross motor gift that lasts.

Family Favorite

Strider 12 Sport, No Pedal Balance

As soon as our kids were walking, we had them on balance bikes! And by 4 both were riding pedal bikes with no problems and no training wheels!

Little Tikes Activity Garden Playhouse

We loved this playset so much that when we were done, we gave it to another family, and they used it for both of their kids. It’s the kind of big gift that gets passed down, and our Little Tikes guide has more like it.

Little Tikes Activity Garden Playhouse

Little Tikes Activity Garden Playhouse

We loved this playset and even gifted it to a family who has used it for their two kids! Climb and slide, or sort and click. This activity center has dozens of things for little ones to do.

  • Convertible frame shape
  • Shape sorter, ball drop, mini-piano, bells, a slide, shutters, a front door, mailbox, and so much more

Two more big-ish gifts: a push walker that isn’t covered in buttons (so the focus stays on walking), and a set of big foam blocks. My kids play with foam blocks at the gym, the library, and the science center, and they never get tired of them.

Skip Hop Baby Walker

One of the things I dislike about most walker toys is that they are covered in buttons, lights, and other distractions. This design leaves a little market for kids to play with, but the focus is on the walking aspect.

  • Grow-With-Me Fun in 5 Ways: From first sit-ups to confident cruising, our convertible baby walker grows with your little one from 6 months to 5 years. Sit, cruise, push the shopping cart, roll the stroller, or dive into pretend play and spark creativity with endless ways to explore, learn, and play!
  • Supports Balance, Motor Skills & Early Learning: Our baby push walker is thoughtfully designed to help little ones practice walking, balancing, and counting. Its interactive features encourage gross and fine motor development, imaginative play, and early problem-solving in a fun, engaging way.
  • Detachable Play Panel for Floor & Easel Play: The removable play panel turns into a mini easel or floor activity station. Detachable fruits and veggies let kids role-play as farmers market workers or shopkeepers, building hand-eye coordination, cause & effect, and pretend play skills while exploring at their own pace.
  • Farm-Themed Fun: With a bright, farmstand-inspired design, the baby activity walker includes interactive fruits and veggies designed to keep your child engaged and entertained for years of learning fun. Coordinates with Skip Hop Farmstand collection. Size (inches): 16.3L x 18.5W x 18H

ECR4Kids SoftZone Climb and Crawl Playset

Kids love soft play (with foam building blocks and large cushions). Mine play with these at the gym, the library, and science center.

  • Activity Playset: Five big, soft foam blocks for toddlers to use as they develop agility and improve important motor skills in a playroom or classroom; a thoughtful gift for birthdays or holidays.
  • Motor Development: Assemble a fun beginner climber by connecting large square and ramp with stay-put fasteners; little adventurers will gain confidence while crawling and climbing across the pieces.
  • Durable Materials: Dense foam core is covered in soft vegan leather; platform, wedge and half-moon shapes feature a non-slip base for stability.
  • Certified Safe: This latex-free indoor play set is UL GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low VOCs, CPSIA compliant, adheres to CAL TB 117 requirements, and constructed with CertiPUR-US Certified foam.

Books for a 1st Birthday

If you want a book that feels like a toy, these are the ones my kids loved. The LeapFrog word book seems to read to them like magic (and it switches to Spanish).

Books with buttons are a hit at every age. Even my 6-year-old still loves them. The soft activity book is small enough to toss in the diaper bag. For more books and music picks, see our musical toys and books guide.

LeapFrog Learning Friends 100 Words Book

My kids loved this book. It seems to read to them like magic (just touch a picture and hear a word or sound). I loved that it can also be switched to Spanish.

  • Learn Categories: This baby activity book includes word categories such as pets, animals, food, mealtime, colors, activities, opposites, outside and more
  • Learn Sounds: Touch the words on the pages to hear new vocabulary, sound effects, and fun facts; hear the two theme songs by pressing the light-up star button
  • Learn Languages: This highly engaging book for kids includes words, songs, and instructions heard in both English and Spanish to promote both language skills

Baby Einstein Amazin Animals Sound Book

Even my 6 year old still loves books with buttons. Interactive books are great for getting kids who are hesitant to read into books.

Melissa & Doug K’s Kids My First Activity Book

A cute book to take and toss in your bag. Has lots of sensory input like a busy board, just for babies!

  • Multi-texture crinkly flaps
  • Charming scenes to explore and discuss
  • Machine washable

Babies Love Lift-a-Flap Boxed Set

We love lift-a-flap books at my house! As your baby gets older, they can practice lifting on each page too.

  • 6 chunky and sturdy flaps are extra strong so your little one can open and close again and again.
  • Surprise and delight baby with bright artwork and special treats under each flap.
  • Perfectly sized for little hands and fingers to open and close the flaps.

DK Books Baby Touch and Feel Animals

We must have 2 dozen touch-and-feel books from DK. They are great quality and have a lot of different textures (where some brands have the same textures in every book).

  • Touch and feel books help children who are not interested in books engage in books
  • The sensory experience of seeing a picture, hearing you read the words, and feeling the texture is perfect for early development

First Birthday Gifts That Aren’t Toys

If you know the family already has a lot of toys (and most do), a non-toy gift can be the one they’re most grateful for. None of these need to be fancy.

  • A zoo or children’s museum membership. It’s a gift the whole family uses all year. Lots of children’s museums, trampoline parks, and indoor playgrounds also have toddler times, and they’re usually deeply discounted, so a punch pass is a nice smaller version.
  • A class or lessons. Toddler swim lessons, a music class, or a gym class are fun for the kid and give the parent a built-in outing.
  • A contribution to a 529 college savings plan. Not exciting at the party, but the parents will thank you. Add a card with a note about what you hope they learn someday.
  • Keepsakes. A first-year memory book, a handprint or footprint kit, or a special plate they can eat from on every birthday.
  • Books and a library card. Books are always out at our house, never part of the rotation, so a book never gets lost in the shuffle. Pair a favorite book with a trip to sign them up for their first library card. (Our library has blocks and puppets, so my kids never mind going.)
  • Clothes and pajamas in the next size up. They’ll need them in a few months, and nobody ever buys the next size.
  • Your time. Offer a babysitting night, a meal, or a day at the park with the birthday kid. For a lot of parents, that’s the best gift on the table.

Practical Gifts Kids Actually Get Excited About

My husband likes to chuckle when a new booster seat, potty seat, or step stool shows up in our gift piles. But kids want to be independent little creatures, and they really do get excited over things like this!

Eiury Toddler Booster Seat

Teaching kids empathy and nurturing can also be demonstrated through self-help tasks at home. My kids have their booster chairs so they can get up and down from the table independently (no straps or sides). It also lets them be a part of family dinner conversation.

  • Effective Heightening: The interior of our booster seat is 3.5 inches thick high-density foam, which can provide effective support and allow children to eat or play at a suitable height
  • Safety and Stability: Each booster seat has 2 adjustable safety belts and unfolding fixed straps. There are also anti-slip particles at the bottom, which can effectively secure the cushion and prevent it from sliding

Little2Big Toilet Seat

Teaching your child to care for others can look like teaching them to do things for themselves as well. This toilet seat (along with a step stool) allows them to set up their potty and go to the bathroom independently (wiping can come later!).

  • Transition from Adult to Child Use with Ease: 2-in-1 toilet seat works for the whole family, the potty seat stays secured in the lid during adult use and kids simply lift the toddler seat to release
  • Saves Space in the Bathroom: Built-in plastic toddler potty seat eliminates the need for an extra potty chair or insert – eliminating bathroom clutter and extra cleaning tasks
  • Fits Round Toilets: This USA made seat measures 14.38u201d wide x 16.95u201d long and fits all standard elongated toilets including American Standard, Kohler, Toto and more; measure your toilet in seconds – watch our video above to learn how
  • Slow Close & Quiet: Soft close toilet lid prevents loud slamming and pinched little fingers, simply tap the lid closed

When the Invitation Says “No Gifts, Please”

Plenty of families ask for no gifts at first birthday parties, and honestly, I get it. If you’re the guest:

  • Respect it. Showing up with a big wrapped box puts the parents in an awkward spot, especially if other guests followed the request.
  • Bring a card. Write a note to the birthday kid about their first year. Parents keep these.
  • If you really want to give something, keep it small and quiet. A board book is the easiest “not really a gift” gift, or drop something off another day instead of at the party.
  • Offer help or an experience. A babysitting night or a trip to the zoo together doesn’t add to the pile.
  • Ask about a fund. Some families would welcome a 529 contribution or a donation to a cause they care about.

FAQ

What do you get a baby for their first birthday?

Something that lasts into the second year: a push toy or balance bike, a simple drop or stacking toy, a first pretend play set, or board books. If the family already has plenty of toys, a membership, a class, or a 529 contribution is a great alternative.

What is a good non-toy first birthday gift?

A zoo or children’s museum membership, toddler swim or music lessons, a first-year keepsake book, clothes in the next size up, a 529 contribution, or your time (a babysitting night goes a long way).

What should you not give for a first birthday?

Skip anything marked 3+ (small parts), toys that do all the playing, screens, and giant surprise gifts the parents haven’t okayed.

Is it rude to bring a gift when the invitation says no gifts?

It can put the parents in an awkward spot. A heartfelt card is the safest choice. If you want to give something, keep it small (like a board book) or drop it off another day.

What do I do with all the toys after a first birthday party?

Put most of them away and bring out two or three at a time. Rotate on your schedule and pick from different categories. Toys feel new again every time they come back out.
