I’m picky about toys that are covered in buttons and lights (it’s my biggest complaint about most baby toys). But a handful of VTech toys have earned a real spot at our house, starting with the ball that finally got my late crawler moving.
These are the 6 VTech toys I recommend across the site, sorted by the play categories I use for our toy rotation, with ages on every pick. It’s a short list on purpose.

Why We Like VTech
I don’t love a lot of electronic learning toys. I find a lot of them too close-ended. But VTech does a nice job of balancing the two.
- The electronics have a job. The best VTech toys use lights and sounds to get kids moving (chasing a ball, pushing a bulldozer) instead of just sitting and pressing buttons.
- They’re in our quiet time setup, too. Our camera monitor and the color-changing light we use for quiet time are both VTech. They aren’t toys, so they aren’t on the list, but it’s a brand that we trust.
The downsides: electronic toys mean batteries, and they can be loud. Some take a little finesse (the bulldozer balls don’t always go in easily). And VTech isn’t where I’d shop for open-ended toys like blocks or art.
The Best VTech Toys by Age
| Age | What to look for | More toys for this age |
|---|---|---|
| 6 mo+ | Wiggle and Crawl Ball | Toys for 6 to 8 months |
| 9 mo+ | Turn and Learn Driver | Toys for 9 to 11 months |
| 1+ | Pop-a-Balls Bulldozer for new walkers | Toys for 12 to 17 months |
| 2+ | KidiBeats drums, Drill and Learn Toolbox | Toys for 2-year-olds |
| 5+ | Kidi Star DJ Mixer Pro | Toys for 5-year-olds |
VTech Crawling and Walking Toys
This is where VTech baby toys won me over. These are gross motor toys with a little extra motivation built in.
Wiggle and Crawl Ball (ages 6 mo+)
My second was a late crawler. This ball wiggles, wobbles, and rolls just out of reach, and it’s what got him tilting, leaning, and eventually scooting after it so he could keep playing. If you have a content sitter who isn’t in a hurry to move, this is a gentle nudge.
VTech Wiggle and Crawl Ball
My second was a late crawler. This ball helped him learn to tilt, lean, and eventually scoot to keep playing with it.
- Move and crawl with the animal friends on the Wiggle and Crawl Ball by VTech
- Interactive ball wiggles and wobbles on its own encouraging your little one to chase after it; features 45+ playful songs, melodies, sounds and cheerful phrases
- Five flashing lights attract your baby's attention while spinning and twisting animals encourage interaction; play and crawl with the moving ball
Pop-a-Balls Bulldozer (ages 1+)
My kids loved pushing this around and watching the balls pop out. It’s a great toy for early walkers: they push, the balls pop, and then they have to balance and coordinate to get the balls back in.
That part takes some finesse, but loading the balls back up by hand is great fine motor practice. I also love that the handle doubles as storage for the balls.
VTech Pop-a-Balls Bulldozer
My kids loved pushing this around and watching the balls pop out. It does take some finess to get the balls to go into the bulldozer, but it was great fine motor practice loading the balls back up with their hands too.
- Push the handle to roll the red bulldozer across the floor and watch it pop balls out of the chimney into the bucket
- Press the buttons to learn colors, numbers, phrases and music
- Grab the chunky handle to encourage motor skill development

VTech Pretend Play Toys
Both of these are about copying the grown-ups, which is where pretend play starts for most little kids.
Turn and Learn Driver (ages 6 mo+)
Oh boy, did my kids get a lot of use out of this one. They pretended to be bus drivers, pilots, or anything else with an engine. It’s a steering wheel, so the pretend part comes easily, even for kids who aren’t making up big stories yet.
VTech Turn and Learn Driver
Oh boy did my kids get alot of use out of this toy! They loved to pretend to be bus drivers, pilots, or anything else that had an engine.
- Little hands eager to explore can turn the steering wheel and press colorful buttons to discover animals, vehicles and sounds with over 60 songs and phrases
- Slide between Animal, Driving and Music modes to keep little drivers entertained through sounds and melodies that encourage hands-on play
- Honk the horn to introduce road safety with red, yellow, and green lights; perfect for teaching simple concepts like opposites and directions
- Enhance imaginative role-play by using the signal lever, checking the mirror, and shifting gears while pretending to drive
Drill and Learn Toolbox (ages 2+)
My kids love a tool belt (it’s one of their favorite accessories), so a toolbox was an easy yes. This is a beginner set: they practice screwing in screws and using the wrench with a little more help than real tools would give them. It’s pretend play, fine motor, and a first taste of STEM all in one box.
VTech Drill and Learn Toolbox
My kids love a toolbelt (one of their favorite accessories!). We also loved this beginner toolbox to practice screwing screws and wrenching with more assistance.
- Interactive toolbox, tool belt, tools, plastic nails and screws give little fixer uppers all they need to tackle projects; drill screws into holes or make the interlocking gears spin
- Learn about colors, numbers, tools; explore how to fix things with two double-sided project cards
- Three tool buttons play wrench, hammer and drill sounds and songs and teach how tools are used
VTech Close-Ended Toys
Close-ended toys are very important for learning. This tablet lets kids practice basic spelling and math, as well as follow rules for games, and more.

VTech Musical Toys
Music is VTech’s other sweet spot. Our musical toys guide has more if you’re building a music shelf.
KidiBeats Kids Drums (ages 2+)
We play this at home all the time. Kids can follow the beats as each drum pad lights up (that’s close-ended), or switch to what we call “jam band mode” and make their own beat (that’s open-ended). It’s the word bank versus multiple-choice idea in one toy, and it keeps it interesting longer.
VTech KidiBeats Kids Drums
We play this at home all the time. Follow the beats as each drum pad lights up (close-ended), or turn it to "jam band mode," as we call it, and make your own beat (open-ended).
- Kids learning toy has three drum pads and cymbal each with its own unique sound for sensory development
- Toddlers can play along to 9 melodies in styles including rock, dance and pop; music toy teaches letters, numbers, and music
- Kids drum set has 4 modes of play: Free Play, Letters, Numbers, and Follow-Along; each drum features a unique LED light
Kidi Star DJ Mixer Pro (ages 5+)
This was a huge hit for my youngest son’s birthday. We had an earlier model, and this one has even more features. Kids can mix, record their own tracks, and play them back. It’s a great pick for older kids who have outgrown the toddler music toys but still want to make noise (lots of it).
VTech Kidi Star DJ Mixer Pro
This was a huge hit for my youngest son's birthday. We had a previous model, but this one is updated with even more features. You can even record your own tracks and play them back!
- Record songs, melodies and loops, then play them back to wow the crowd
- Play built-in games, set off the spinning lights; plug in headphones for quieter play
- Scratch, jam and create your own mixes with the turntable and keyboard, or use the sound grid to customize the fifteen included songs in thousands of different combinations

Get StartedFAQ
At our house, the Wiggle and Crawl Ball, the Pop-a-Balls Bulldozer, the Turn and Learn Driver, and the KidiBeats drums got the most use. For older kids, the Kidi Star DJ Mixer was a birthday hit.
The Wiggle and Crawl Ball. It rolls just out of reach, which gives babies a reason to lean, tilt, and scoot. It helped my late crawler get moving.
The ones that make your child think (puzzles, fine motor), move (gross motor), or teach musical skills are. Look for toys where the lights and sounds get kids doing something, like crawling, walking, or following a beat, instead of just pushing buttons.
The Kidi Star DJ Mixer Pro is labeled 5+, and kids can record and play back their own tracks. The KidiBeats drums and the Drill and Learn Toolbox are labeled 2+ and still work for preschoolers.
