Finding the best stocking stuffers for toddlers can be tricky. Half the time it winds up being candy, snacks, or cheap toys that will find their way to the landfill in a few weeks.
So I use stockings for small toys that we’ll use all year long. Every pick below comes from our catalog of toys we’ve used, gifted, or tested, and they’re sorted by age so you can jump right to your kid.

What Makes a Good Stocking Stuffer
My rules are pretty simple, and they come from years of watching what survives past New Year’s at our house and what ends up in the donation bag.
- It gets used more than once. Art supplies, travel activities, bath toys, and books win here. Novelty stuff that’s fun for five minutes on Christmas morning doesn’t.
- It has a job after Christmas. If I can already picture where it goes (the restaurant bag, the car, the quiet time shelf), it makes the cut.
- It’s the right size for the kid, not just the stocking. Anything marked 3+ usually has small parts. For a 1 year old or a young 2 year old who still mouths everything, stick to the picks in those sections.
Stocking Stuffers for 1 Year Olds
One year olds are the easiest kids in the world to shop for, because the wrapping paper is half the fun 😂. They’re working on is grabbing, stacking, dumping, chewing, and figuring out that turning a page makes something new appear.

More small, safe picks for a 1 year old: silicone stacking coasters (you won’t find these on most toy lists, but they were a must-have for both of my kids), palm-grip crayons for a first scribble, a DK touch-and-feel book (we own about two dozen), a soft activity book to toss in the diaper bag, and an echo microphone that needs no batteries.

Stocking Stuffers for 2 Year Olds
Two is when they want to do everything you do. Tongs, scissors, a real toothbrush: to a 2 year old, that’s big-kid stuff, and that’s the whole appeal.

Small Ideas That Aren’t Toys
Some of the best things in our stockings don’t come in a toy box at all.
- Yoto cards. If you want to save money, Make Your Own cards let you load your own music, stories, and even your own voice. Our Yoto Mini review covers the player itself.
- Dollar store instruments. We have every kind: harmonicas, recorders, microphones, shakers. They’re a cheap way to test whether your kid is into music before you buy something bigger.
- A fresh tub of dough or a bag of craft odds and ends. My oldest will turn popsicle sticks, tape, and a paper towel roll into an invention.
What to Do With Stocking Stuffers After Christmas
Instead of dumping everything into the toy bin with the rest of the Christmas haul, I split it up.
- The restaurant bag. Water Wow, scratch art, a few Squigz, crayons that don’t break. Keep these just for eating out and they stay interesting a lot longer.
- The car and travel bag. Wikki Stix, sticker books, and paint with water books all pack flat for road trips and flights. More ideas are in our travel toys guide.
- The quiet time bin. My kids have done quiet time since about 3 and a half. Open-ended stuff like figurines and art supplies works best. That’s also why these small, simple picks are great for independent play in general.
- The rotation closet. Everything else gets put away and comes out a few at a time. We keep 8 toys out, max, and swap them on a schedule. After Christmas, the closet is full, which means you’re set for months. And every time you rotate, it feels like Christmas again!

Things that let them copy you or use their hands: a starter Play-Doh set, toddler scissors, tongs, a hand puppet, a character toothbrush, and a simple fine motor toy like Spike the hedgehog.
Three to five small things is plenty for a toddler, especially if the rest of the family is buying gifts too. I’d rather have three things we’ll use than ten we’ll donate.
Yoto cards, a character toothbrush, art consumables like crayons and dough, bath toys, and books. They get used up or used daily, so they don’t add to the toy pile.
Don’t put everything out at once. Keep most of the new toys stored where kids can’t get them, put out a handful from different play categories, and rotate on a schedule you control. That’s our toy rotation system in a nutshell.
