34 Best Musical Toys for Kids: Instruments to Audio Players

My kids love musical toys, and I think we’ve played with the best ones out there.

Most parents joke that musical toys are really a punishment for the whole house (yes, I agree that a drum set for a 2-year-old isn’t ideal when it comes to noise level).

But joking aside, Musical and multimedia toys are one of the 11 categories in my toy rotation system and are super important for well-rounded play. It is a broader bucket than just instruments or loud toys with buttons, lights, and sounds. 🧸

What Counts as Musical or Multimedia

This category covers four different things:

  • Real instruments: xylophones, drums, shakers, anything a kid makes sound with directly using their own hands.
  • Audio players: screen-free devices that play stories, songs, and podcasts without handing over a tablet.
  • Sound and cause-and-effect toys: buttons and switches that trigger music or sound effects, which lean more toward early STEM than musicianship but still belong here.
  • Books: whether we’re talking picture books or sound books, they are still providing entertainment to the child (even if they can’t read or talk about what they are seeing).

Dollar store shakers and a pot with a wooden spoon count. You do not need to spend money to fill this category. We spent money on a drum set that my kids liked enough (I’ll list it below), but when push comes to shove, they are much happier with a pot, pan, and spatula for their drumming needs.

The Best Musical Toy Instruments for Kids

These are real musical instruments for kids, not toys that play one song.

These toys are always a hit for my kids who want to play “Jam Band,” and they never seem to get tired of them. Our xylophone bench and ukulele are both from Hape, and our drums are from VTech.

Hape Mighty Echo Microphone

1+

An echo microphone doesn't need batteries or produce sounds. Just sing into the center and hear your voice amplified. It's a great addition to a musical instrument set.

  • Echo-effect: Clever acoustic design creates a microphone-style voice effect using natural echo, with no batteries needed.
  • Pretend-Play Button: The red microphone button is a decorative feature designed for imaginative play and has no functional effect.

  • Age Recommendation: the Hape mighty Echo microphone is perfect for kids 12 months and up

Battat Lil' Rockers

We had a prior version to this, but one thing both kids loved was the actual strumming feature. You can run your fingers across the strings (hello sensory!) and it creates the sound.

  • 3 Modes: Play along to 7 pre-recorded songs in song mode or create your own musical masterpiece in electric and acoustic modes!
  • Songbook Included: Learn to play 7 nursery rhymes with the songbook!

VTech KidiBeats Kids Drums

We play this at home all the time. Follow the beats as each drum pad lights up (close-ended), or turn it to "jam band mode," as we call it, and make your own beat (open-ended).

  • Toddlers can play along to 9 melodies in styles including rock, dance and pop; music toy teaches letters, numbers, and music

Hape Kid's Wooden Ukulele

3+

This ukelele is made from wood and has a nice accoustic sound. It's a bit tricky for kids to get the idea of chords before the age of 6, but they still like to strum and pretend to be rockstars!

  • SKILLS DEVELOPMENT: Develops coordination, motor skills and auditory and creative skills
  • ENCOURAGES MUSICALITY: Teaches young kids about basic rhythm, strumming, and other musical techniques
  • FULLY FUNCTIONAL: Sturdy and perfectly sized for young hands yet fully playable and tunable

Yamaha Recorder

Yamaha Recorder

Screen-Free Audio Players

A screen-free audio player lets a kid pick their own story or song without a tablet in the mix. Yoto and Tonies are the two real players in this space right now, and they work differently enough that I have a full review of the Yoto Player.

Short version: my kids were gifted both Yoto Minis and a Tonie box. At the time, the Yoto collection of stories and podcasts that my children liked was larger. We knew we had to invest in only one system, as they can both get pricey. So we went with the Yoto mini for that very simple reason.

These also do double duty at bedtime and quiet time, which is worth knowing if you are building that routine anyway. One device covers two shelves.

The Best Books for Kids Who Can’t Read

Just because your child isn’t reading independently doesn’t mean book time has to be parent time. In fact, books make great quiet time activities for kids of all ages (yes, that means babies too!).

I’ve generally structured this list in the same way as I did for the instruments… Generally from youngest age group to oldest.

Melissa & Doug Soft Activity Book

This is a cute book that doubles as a sensory toy. It teaches kids about stories and has hidden pictures to reveal.

  • 5+ peek-a-boo animals in every scene
  • Multi-texture crinkly flaps
  • Charming scenes to explore and discuss
  • Machine washable

DK Books Baby Touch and Feel Animals

We must have 2 dozen touch-and-feel books from DK. They are great quality and have a lot of different textures (where some brands have the same textures in every book).

  • Touch and feel books help children who are not interested in books engage in books
  • The sensory experience of seeing a picture, hearing you read the words, and feeling the texture is perfect for early development

Pop-Up Peekaboo! Under the Sea

We probably have 10+ books from the Pop-Up Peekaboo! Series. My youngest struggled to engage with books, but these classic pop-ups got his attention right away. As he got older he started lifting the flaps himself too.

Baby Einstein Amazin Animals Sound Book

Even my 6 year old still loves books with buttons. Interactive books are great for getting kids who are hesitant to read into books.

LeapFrog Learning Friends 100 Words Book

My kids loved this book. It seems to read to them like magic (just touch a picture and hear a word or sound). I loved that it can also be switched to Spanish.

  • Learn Categories: This baby activity book includes word categories such as pets, animals, food, mealtime, colors, activities, opposites, outside and more
  • Learn Sounds: Touch the words on the pages to hear new vocabulary, sound effects, and fun facts; hear the two theme songs by pressing the light-up star button
  • Learn Languages: This highly engaging book for kids includes words, songs, and instructions heard in both English and Spanish to promote both language skills

Melissa & Doug Poke-a-Dot Old MacDonald's Farm Book

I will admit I was skeptical about this book series. At a first glace it seemed like just adding a "pop-it" to a book page (I didn't see the value). But after reading, I realized the popping is an interactive part of the story (sometimes finding pictures or words on the page, sometimes "crossing off" items, etc.). Now we are the proud owners of 4 of these books and counting! My kids love them!

Why This Category Gets Skipped

Musical toys get tucked away, their batteries run out and never get replaced, or mysteriously “disappear.” It’s understandable šŸ˜‚

They are loud, and loud is stimulating (talking for parents here), and stimulating is exhausting.

But instruments help teach children about language and communication. They might memorize the words to their favorite song before they even know their last name.

Musical notation is a language in itself, and kids (just like with any language) can pick it up much easier when they are young.

Music and multimedia do not have to = loud. You can choose toys with volume control and books for the days when you’re feeling overwhelmed. And let them jam out when you’re in the mood for some silly songs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are musical toys good for developmentally?

Rhythm, language, and early cause and effect. Following a beat, matching a color-coded pad to a sound, or predicting what a button does are all great cognitive tasks, even though it looks and sounds like pure noise from across the room.

At what age should I introduce musical toys?

From birth, in the form of simple cause and effect toys and your own singing. (Our lullabies with lyrics have the words.) Real hand-held instruments, xylophones and shakers, tend to start around 12 months. Instruments with real technique, ukuleles and drum sets with structure, work better closer to 3.

Are audio players like Yoto and Tonies considered musical toys?

Yes, they fall under the same category, musical or multimedia, since the point is sound without a screen. They are a genuinely different sub-type from hands-on instruments, more passive listening than active play, but both belong on the same shelf.

How do I handle how loud musical toys are?

Contain it rather than avoid it. We keep our “loud instruments” (think guitar, flute, harmonica, triangle, etc.) in a bin. Either the whole bin comes out= chaos, or we pick a different toy (DJ set with volume control). You could also do like I do for messy art toys and keep them in a box with a lock. The kids can see the instruments, but they need to ask (and more importantly, you need to agree) before they are opened and played with.

Do musical toys actually help kids learn an instrument later?

In my experience, the cause-and-effect toys and music players don’t help them as much as the actual instruments. At a young age (6 and under), learning musical instruments is more about showing them different options and letting them experiment than actually learning to master it.

What is the difference between a musical toy and a real instrument?

A toy usually makes one fixed sound no matter what you do to it (or maybe there are 2 or 3 modes to choose from). A real instrument, even a simplified kid version like a ukulele, responds differently depending on how you play it.

Do I need both instruments and an audio player, or just one?

Both, if you can. Instruments can be quite expensive, but in my experience, buying a harmonica or flute from the Dollar Tree lets them experiment and see if they like it before investing in something more robust. Can’t afford a Tonie or Yoto? I don’t blame you. They are expensive systems. We invested in the initial players, and now rely on getting cards and characters from friends and family for birthdays and Christmas. Parent Hack: There are so many free audiobooks and podcasts for kids. If you have a screen-free Bluetooth speaker (even an inexpensive one from Five Below), you can play audio for your kids from your phone. They don’t need to see the screen.
