These are the toys for a 6 month old that we actually used, plus a few free ideas from around the house. Six month olds are rolling, reaching for exactly the thing they want, sitting up with a little help, and putting absolutely everything in their mouth.
The toys you got at the baby shower suddenly don’t entertain them anymore, so you have to set out looking for the best toys for 6 month olds.
So this list covers the whole 6 to 8 month stretch, and it’s built around what yoour baby is working on developmentally. Everything is sorted into the 11 play categories we use in our house to make sure we have a well-rounded toy shelf (ok, shelves… but that’s a different story!).

One quick note: milestones are a range, not a pass-fail. My second was a late crawler, and he got there in his own time. If something is nagging at you, bring it up with your pediatrician. You know your baby best.
Independent Play & Toy Rotation for Babies
At this age, playing alone looks like your baby sitting in a safe spot or on a mat near you while you start dinner. Start with a couple of minutes at a time.
The skill grows the same way naps consolidate, a little at a time. My independent play guide has the steps. It’s the groundwork for quiet time years from now (trust me, future you will be grateful).
A playard is a great way for babies to have some separation from you while you are in the same room. Rotate 2 or 3 toys at a time into the playpen. That’s basically toy rotation system, even for babies.
Toddleroo Superyard Playard
We used ours as a playpen, and when my little one wanted more space to roam, we attached it to the walls (with the adaptor) and created a baby-safe side of the room.
- SAFE PLAY SPACE: Create a safe play area for kids. The 6-panel play yard encloses up to 18.5 sq. ft. and is 26 in. tall. Our portable baby playpen has six bright, playful colors and folds quickly for easy portability with included carry strap.
- INDOOR & OUTDOOR USE: Our baby play yard is great for indoor or outdoor use. The UV-resistant design keeps colors vibrant and ensures long-lasting durability. The SuperGrip feet and skid-resistant pads prevent movement and protect hardwood floors.
- EASY TO USE: The baby fence has self-locking hinges that only bend in one direction. The clicking noise ensures the hinges are locked. Use our Superyard Wall Mount Kit (sold separately) to convert the play yard into an extra-wide baby gate.
- ADJUSTABLE & FLEXIBLE: Adjust our toddler playpen to fit your space. The hinges move independently for angled or straight setups. Need a bigger area? Add a 2-Panel Extension (sold separately) for 6.5 ft. corner to corner, a 34.4 sq. ft. play area.
- MADE IN USA: Our Baby Safety Alliance certified play yard brings peace of mind to the entire family. We stand for the highest safety, quality, and operational standards while creating the ideal collection of products for babies ages 6-24 months. Proudly made in the USA!
Toddleroo Superyard Wall Mount Kit
We used this wall mount kit to convert our playard into an extra wide gate. And don't worry, once you attach it to the wall, it's still easy to take on and off to convert back to a playpen when needed.
- PERFECT FOR WIDE OPENINGS: This wall mount kit allows your Superyard to span openings from 38.5 in. up to over 16 ft., making it ideal for open floor plans or large spaces that need to be sectioned off.
- COMPATIBILITY: For use with Superyards and Petyards up to 6-panels. To ensure safety, do not exceed 6-panels. Not for use at the top of stairs.
- EASY TO INSTALL: The Superyard Wall Mount Kit should be mounted into solid materials such as wood, metal or a stud behind sheetrock. Each Wall Mount Kit comes complete with wall hinges, screws and mounting connectors.
- FLEXIBLE CONFIGURATION: The hinges on the Superyard allow you to move the panels independently for the perfect fit. Stretch the panels straight across or at an angle, the choice is yours.
- MADE IN USA: Our Baby Safety Alliance certified play yard brings peace of mind to the entire family. We stand for the highest safety, quality, and operational standards while creating the ideal collection of products for babies ages 6-24 months. Proudly made in the USA!
Gross Motor Toys for 6 Month Olds
Rolling from tummy to back, pushing up on straight arms, and leaning on their hands to sit are all on the 6 month list. Babies need floor time to practice all three, plus a reason to move. More options live in our gross motor toy guide.
Ingenuity 3-in-1 Baby Jumper and Activity Center
My oldest was a refluxy baby who was never happy. That was until we found this jumper! I think he might have lived in his activity center if we let him.

Tummy time toys still matter at 6 months, especially for babies working on crawling.
Bright Starts 5-in-1 Your Way Ball Play – Jumbo Play Mat
Both of my kids loved this play gym as infants. From laying on their back watching the singing elephant, to tummy time on the silky mat, to propped up with the included pillow, and when they are ready to sit and play, it converts to a ball pit!

My second was a late crawler, and the VTech ball that wiggles just out of reach got him tilting, leaning, and scooting. It’s one of the big toys in our Little Tikes favorites.
I also like the Skip Hop walker because it isn’t covered in buttons. It keeps the focus on moving, for when your baby is ready.
VTech Wiggle and Crawl Ball
My second was a late crawler. This ball helped him learn to tilt, lean, and eventually scoot to keep playing with it.

Little Tikes Activity Garden Playhouse
We loved this playset and even gifted it to a family who has used it for their two kids! Climb and slide, or sort and click. This activity center has dozens of things for little ones to do.
- Convertible frame shape
- Shape sorter, ball drop, mini-piano, bells, a slide, shutters, a front door, mailbox, and so much more
Skip Hop Baby Walker
One of the things I dislike about most walker toys is that they are covered in buttons, lights, and other distractions. This design leaves a little market for kids to play with, but the focus is on the walking aspect.
- Grow-With-Me Fun in 5 Ways: From first sit-ups to confident cruising, our convertible baby walker grows with your little one from 6 months to 5 years. Sit, cruise, push the shopping cart, roll the stroller, or dive into pretend play and spark creativity with endless ways to explore, learn, and play!
- Supports Balance, Motor Skills & Early Learning: Our baby push walker is thoughtfully designed to help little ones practice walking, balancing, and counting. Its interactive features encourage gross and fine motor development, imaginative play, and early problem-solving in a fun, engaging way.
- Detachable Play Panel for Floor & Easel Play: The removable play panel turns into a mini easel or floor activity station. Detachable fruits and veggies let kids role-play as farmers market workers or shopkeepers, building hand-eye coordination, cause & effect, and pretend play skills while exploring at their own pace.
- Farm-Themed Fun: With a bright, farmstand-inspired design, the baby activity walker includes interactive fruits and veggies designed to keep your child engaged and entertained for years of learning fun. Coordinates with Skip Hop Farmstand collection. Size (inches): 16.3L x 18.5W x 18H
Fine Motor Toys for 6 Month Olds
“Reaches to grab a toy they want” is the big one at 6 months. Those grabs are clumsy at first, so toys with lots of places to hold on help them win. Our fine motor skills toy guide has more as their grip gets stronger.
Bright Starts Oball Shaker Rattle
My babies loved to twist their fingers through the holes on the ends and use that grip to shake this rattle like crazy. It’s light, easy to hold, and easy to chew, so it checks the grab, shake, and mouth boxes all at once.
Bright Starts Oball Easy Grasp Classic Ball
Bright Starts Oball Shaker Rattle
Sassy Ring O Links
The smallest hands can feel the different textures of each ring, and once your little one gets some dexterity, they can link and unlink the rings for fine motor practice.
- TACTILE STIMULATION: Different materials and surfaces stimulate baby's sense of touch and teach baby to recognize new objects.
- EASY GRASP: Textured handle is easy to grasp and great for mouthing

- Top Rack Dishwasher Safe
Open-Ended Toys for 6 Month Olds
Open-ended toys don’t have a “right or wrong,” way to play with them (unlike a puzzle that has one solution). At 6 months, that means simple things your baby can grab, drop, bang, and mouth, with no lights telling them what to do. Our open-ended toys guide follows these kinds of toys all the way up to age 6.
Silicone Drink Coasters
You won’t find coasters on a standard baby toy list. 🤣 But stacking coasters were a must-have for both of my kids. Babies love grabbing them, banging them together, and dropping them over and over.
They’re also a sneaky preview of stacking, which comes a little later. And when your baby loses interest, you have a set of coasters. That’s a win in my book.
Silicone Drink Coasters
You're not going to find coasters on a standard kid's toys list 🤣 But stacking coasters were a must-have for both of my kids. We had wooden coasters, but the silicone ones are a definite uprgrade and much better if they decide to use them as a teething toy!
Play silks are perfect for peekaboo right now (and they’re capes in a couple of years). Sophie is a classic in my house and my go-to baby shower gift, and she’s made for chewing.

Blocks and Stacking Toys for 6 Month Olds

Musical Toys for 6 Month Olds
Squealing and taking turns making sounds are both on the 6 month list, and music is the perfect partner. Your baby bangs, you sing, they squeal back.
More ideas, including cheap instruments, are in our musical toys guide. And for the slow moments, our list of lullabies with lyrics is right there.

The Magic Touch Piano is a Baby Einstein and Hape collaboration, and it grows with them.

This piano leaves kids to create on their own (open-ended play), listen to music (sensory), or follow along with songs and patterns (close-ended).
Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes Musical Toy
My kids loved their little "radio," that they could choose the songs. It's a pretty non-descript toy, but makes the list for being a great music player that both kids adored.
Sensory and Teething Toys for 6 Month Olds
“Puts things in their mouth to explore them” is a 6 month milestone, so let’s plan play for it. Mouthing is how babies learn about texture, shape, and size, and it lines up with teething for a lot of babies.
Good teething toys for this age are soft, easy to grip, and safe to chill in the fridge. Our sensory toys guide has plenty of low-mess options.
Nuby Teethe N' Pop Sensory Play Teether
Our babies loved the feel of Nuby teething toys. This turtle has different textures for them to explore with their teeth and gums. It also practices hand-eye coordination.

A water mat is a great way to spruce up tummy time when your baby is little. It helps them move their head and arms for gross motor control. As they get older they can start to use their fingers to push around the objects for fine-motor development.
Books for 6 Month Olds
At 6 months, your baby will try to chew them, and that’s okay. The right books survive it. Books are also great for the “takes turns making sounds” milestone: you read, they babble, you answer.
DK Baby Touch and Feel Animals
DK Books Baby Touch and Feel Animals
We must have 2 dozen touch-and-feel books from DK. They are great quality and have a lot of different textures (where some brands have the same textures in every book).

STEM Toys for 6 Month Olds (Bonus)
STEM is my bonus category, and at 6 months it’s all cause and effect: “I did this, and that happened.” Repeating the same action to get the same result is how babies test their first little theories. More in our STEM toys guide.
Fat Brain PipSquigz
We never owned this jumbo baby version, but my kids loved the regular Squigz, and these give babies so much sensory input that they had to make the list. You can see the rest of the brand in our Fat Brain Toys guide.

Art for Infants
Crayons and markers are a no at this age (everything goes in the mouth, remember). For now, “art” means color and contrast: name colors as you play, point out bright pictures in books, and let your baby look at things from new angles. When your kid is ready for real supplies, our art supplies guide sorts them by mess level.
Nurturing toys for Infants
“Knows familiar people” and “likes to look at self in a mirror” are both on the 6 month list, and they’re the roots of nurturing play. Hold your baby up to a mirror and name who’s there.
Baby Einstein Floor Mirror
- Catch baby's eye during tummy time
- High contrast patterns are easier for baby's foggy eyesight to see
- Flip through fun flashcards and support cognitive development
- Includes baby-safe mirror
- Cards include link for carriers
- Wipes clean
Show them photos of grandparents and cousins. Be gentle with a stuffed animal in front of them (“soft touches”). Later on, many kids pick a favorite stuffy. My son eventually had a little bear he wanted me to kiss goodnight. Our nurturing toys guide covers the dolls and pets that come next.
What’s Coming Next (9 Months)
The next checkpoint is the CDC’s 9 month checklist. By then, most babies sit without support, move things from one hand to the other, bang two things together, look for a toy when it drops out of sight, and laugh at peekaboo.
They may also get shy around strangers and start saying “mamamama” and “bababa.” That’s when object permanence toys, bigger stacking, and push toys really take off, and our best toys for 9 month olds list picks up there.
Shopping for a younger sibling or looking back? See our 4 month old toys and newborn toys. Our baby toys hub covers every stage from birth to 23 months, and if you’re packing for a trip, our travel toys guide has baby picks too. Everything else is on our toy guides page.

Get StartedFAQ
The best toys for a 6 month old baby are things they can grab, shake, bang, and chew: rattles, soft blocks, teethers, stacking cups, and board books. Add a movement toy for rolling and sitting practice, and a simple music toy. Your baby doesn’t need much, just a little variety.
Fewer than you think. I’d keep 2 or 3 out at a time and swap them every day or two. Keep the rest out of sight so the swapped-in toys feel new.
Toys that roll or wiggle just out of reach give them a reason to move. My second was a late crawler, and a wiggling ball got him tilting, leaning, and scooting. Plenty of floor time matters more than any toy.
Once your baby has good head control, they can be a fun break (my oldest loved his). Just balance them with lots of floor time, since that’s where rolling, pushing up, and sitting practice happens.
Soft silicone teethers, chilled (not frozen solid) teether keys, and toys made to be chewed. Skip anything with small parts, and check toys often for wear.
Around 6 months, most babies love knocking down a tower you build. Soft blocks are perfect for this. Stacking on their own comes later in the first year.
