The best toys for 4 year olds are the ones that focus on the skills they are mastering (getting ready for preschool and kindergarten!). Four is the age where my house got loud in a whole new way. My youngest is 4, and when he plays superheroes upstairs, the whole house knows.

Good toys for 4 year olds aren’t the flashiest ones in the aisle. The top toys for 4 year olds at my house are the ones that survive years of play.
It’s also the age where the little stuff starts to matter for school: how he holds a crayon, whether he can snip a piece of paper, whether he can lose a game without a meltdown (we’re working on it).
So this list isn’t 30 random “hot toys.” It’s built around what 4 year olds are actually working on, and it’s sorted into the 11 play categories I use for our toy rotation.

What 4 Year Olds Are Working On
Before we get to toys, here’s what’s actually going on developmentally. These come straight from CDC’s milestone checklist for 4 year olds, which lists the skills most kids (75% or more) can do by their 4th birthday. I’ve grouped them the same way the CDC does.
Social and emotional
- Pretends to be something else during play (teacher, superhero, dog)
- Asks to go play with other kids if none are around
- Comforts others who are hurt or sad
- Avoids danger, like not jumping from tall heights at the playground
- Likes to be a “helper”
Language and communication
- Says sentences with four or more words
- Says some words from a song, story, or nursery rhyme
- Talks about at least one thing that happened during the day
- Answers simple questions like “What is a coat for?”
Thinking and problem-solving
- Names a few colors of items
- Tells what comes next in a well-known story
- Draws a person with three or more body parts
Movement and physical
- Catches a large ball most of the time
- Serves themselves food or pours water (with a grown-up nearby)
- Unbuttons some buttons
- Holds a crayon or pencil between fingers and thumb, not a fist
Every one of those skills has a toy category that practices it without feeling like practice. Here’s the cheat sheet:

🍎 One quick teacher note: milestones are a range, not a report card. If your kid is nailing the pretend play but still fists the crayon, that’s normal. If something is nagging at you, bring it up with your pediatrician. You know your kid best.
Independent Play & Quiet Time for 4 Year Olds
Put out no more than 8 toys at a time and swap them on a schedule you control. That’s the whole toy-rotation system in one sentence.
Four is also prime quiet time age at my house. For that time alone, I lean on open-ended toys, art, and audio. I save the close-ended stuff (puzzles, instruction builds) for when I’m around, because a stuck 4 year old only has two options: yell for help or give up.

Gross Motor Toys for 4 Year Olds
Catching a big ball, hopping, and learning what’s actually too high to jump off are all on the 4 year old list. The trampoline and the hopper are both from our favorite Little Tikes toys.
Big bodies need big movement, and they need it even on the days it’s pouring. Our gross motor toy guide has a lot more options for small spaces.

This is one of the only toys in my house that never, ever rotates out. My kids play with it every day. I was sure an “indoor ball that won’t break anything” was a gimmick, but it really is soft enough to whack around the living room. It’s great for the catching milestone too, because it’s big and light, so they actually get their hands on it instead of taking it to the face.

I wasn't sure this ball could live up to its claims (an indoor ball that won't damage anything?!), but sure enough, it does what it says. This is one of the few toys that never gets rotated out. Simply because my kids play with it every day, and it's great for indoor exercise.

If you have the space, the 3-foot trampoline is a rainy day lifesaver (and it folds down when you need the floor back). Balance stepping stones give them a way to test their limits that isn’t your couch cushions.

This trampoline is always a hit at our house! It folds down for easy storage. It's perfect for little ones learning to jump with both feet. Once your child gets older (and can jump higher) you may have to move to a bigger model as we have found it can be a little unstable for our tall 6 year old.

Close-Ended Toys and Games for 4 Year Olds
Close-ended toys are the multiple choice test. One right answer, steps to follow. They aren’t trending like open-eneded toys, but 4 year olds need the rule-following, turn-taking, and “what comes next” practice. My close-ended toys guide explains why they matter just as much as open-ended.

We’ve graduated from Duplo to regular LEGO at our house (though the Duplo still gets played with). We picked this box on purpose because it comes with a pile of wheels, and in my house, anything that rolls wins. You can follow the idea book (close-ended) or dump it out and build whatever (open-ended). The pieces are smaller, so if you have a baby in the house, this is a table or quiet time toy. Musical and Multimedia Toys for 4 Year Olds

Aim for variety over volume: something for gross motor, fine motor, open-ended play, close-ended play, blocks, music, art, sensory, pretend play, and nurturing, plus a STEM bonus. Most of what you already own fits somewhere. Fill the empty categories first.
I put out no more than 8 at a time and rotate them weekly. A doctor kit covers pretend play and nurturing, and Play-Doh covers sensory, art, and fine motor, so you can cover a lot of categories with just a few toys.
Open-ended toys (Magna-Tiles, LEGO without the instructions), art supplies, and screen-free audio like a Yoto. I save puzzles and instruction builds for when I’m nearby, because a stuck kid either yells for help or quits.
Not really. Four year olds learn from play, full stop. A tea party works on language and taking turns just as well as anything labeled “educational.” Match the toy to a skill they’re working on, but still think of it as play!
Check whether they’re overwhelmed (too many toys out) or stuck (they don’t know how to play with what’s there). Put most of it away, rotate a few at a time, and model one way to play before you walk away.
